Pennsylvania's Community Action Agencies help low-income families reach and maintain self-sufficiency.

I wasn’t less of a person when I was living in poverty than I am now that I have a great job … and it would be my dream that everyone realizes that, because that’s the beginning of healing.   - Dan Jurman, Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County

Self-sufficiency is a measure of how much income is needed for a family to adequately meet its basic needs - without public or private assistance. Each individual has their own personal story about how they ended up in financial distress. Examples include: a death in the family, loss of employment, underperforming educational experience, childhood hardships, increased housing costs or overwhelming debt, health issues, addiction, and more. Community Action provides the resources an individual or family needs to get back on their feet.

The Success Stories page illustrates how barriers to self-sufficiency can be overcome when individuals accept the challenge of pursuing the opportunities provided by their Community Action Agency. The CAAP Matrix highlights a variety of programs offered at 41 agencies across the state. Finally, if you are a vendor whose company mission is to positively impact Pennsylvania’s local communities, consider joining CAAP as an Affiliate Member.
