Julie’s Story: A Testament to the Power of Whole-Family Support

The following is a true story from Tri County Community Action.

At Tri County Community Action, we strive to disrupt the cycle of poverty by addressing its root causes and guiding individuals and families toward self-sufficiency. Julie’s journey illustrates the transformative power of our comprehensive, whole-family approach and the critical role of our four core departments: Utility Assistance, Employment, Education & Financial Empowerment, Housing Security, and Early Childhood & Family Development.

Julie’s first encounter with TCCA arose from a crisis—her utilities had been disconnected due to financial hardship. With the guidance of a Utility Assistance Coordinator, she enrolled in OnTrack, restoring her electricity and alleviating immediate financial stress. During this process, Julie confided in her coordinator about her fears of eviction and her broader financial struggles. Recognizing the need for a deeper intervention, the coordinator connected Julie with our Employment, Education & Financial Empowerment team. With the support of a Self-Sufficiency Coordinator, Julie began addressing her challenges holistically. She accessed mental health services, secured stable housing, and embarked on a GED program to enhance her future opportunities. Julie’s newfound stability enabled her to secure employment and begin building a sustainable foundation for herself and her family.

When Julie faced custody challenges for her two young grandchildren, our Employment, Education & Financial Empowerment team provided unwavering support, helping her gain custody. Now a guardian, Julie turned to our Early Childhood & Family Development department for guidance. Through the Parents as Teachers program, she worked with a Family Development Coordinator who helped her integrate learning activities into her daily routine, secure affordable daycare, and access additional community resources.

Julie’s story exemplifies the resilience and potential that can be unlocked with the right support. From utility assistance to education, employment, and family development, TCCA’s whole-family approach empowered Julie to transform her life and build a brighter future for her grandchildren. While Julie’s journey is unique, her challenges are shared by many. Today, 57,167 individuals in our community face financial uncertainty.

TriCounty Community Action stands ready to provide the support and encouragement they need to thrive. Together, we are fostering hope, resiliency, and empowerment, creating stronger neighborhoods where individuals like Julie can achieve self-sufficiency and inspire others to do the same.
